The 3rd Asian Games were held from May 24 to June 1, 1958 in Tokyo, Japan. A total of 1,820 athletes, coming from 20 countries, competed in 14 sports disciplines at the III Asiad. A total of 13 sports were competed including Hockey, Table tennis, Tennis and Volleyball being introduced for the first time in the Asian Games. The torch relay was also introduced as a new tradition in the Asian Games Tokyo onwards. 79 athletes represented India winning a total of 13 medals.
