The 8th Asiad was hosted a record third time by Bangkok, Thailand after Pakistan dropped its plan to host. A total number of 3,842 athletes, representing 25 countries, competed in these Asian Games. Archery and Bowling debuted as sports disciplines at the Bangkok Games of 1978. India fared well finishing 6th overall excelling in Athletics, Wrestling and Boxing mainly.
