The 1st Asian Games were held from March 4 to March 11, 1951 and the capital city of Delhi, India was unanimously selected to host the first Games. Officially opened by then President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, a total of 489 athletes representing 11 Asian countries participated in 7 sports disciplines. India finished second with a total of 51 medals.
